Some people believe that it is good to share as much information as possible in scientific research, business, and the academic world. Others believe that some information is too important or too valuable to be shared freely.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
It is argued that information concerning research in science, business, and academia should be accessible by all free of charge, whereas there is the counter argument that the importance and value of said information is too great to be shared without limitations. There is certainly merit to the first view, but it is clear that restrictions are necessary for certain types of information. Both views will be examined in detail.
Starting with the possible arguments in favour of free access to information, this mostly relates to the disparity in the world. There are certain countries which are struggling financially, and some suffer from far more serious issues such as the spread of disease and famine. It is hard to argue against their right to developments in medicine and genetically modified crops which could save a great number of lives. Another point to consider is transparency, especially with business transactions. The consumer has a right to know whether companies are producing their products in a safe and sustainable way. Concern for the environment is quite common with the younger generation.
Despite those concerns, not all information should be freely accessible. It would be very difficult for businesses to stay competitive if all of their designs and features were public knowledge. This, however, is not the biggest concern to think about. Personal data and weaponry are far greater areas that need security. Banks use personal data as ways to protect their clients accounts, were anyone to have access to that data, then they could easily commit identity theft. In the worst case possible, dangerous arms could be used. It would be incredibly dangerous for the globe if terrorist groups had the knowledge of how to create dangerous weapons such as biochemical ones which cause mass indiscriminate deaths.
In conclusion, it would help the world if more information was shared, but to share everything freely is far too dangerous and certain safeguards must be kept in place.
