Discourse markers

What are discourse markers?

Discourse markers are words or phrases that are used to organize, connect, or signal relationships between ideas in spoken or written language. They help guide the listener or reader through a conversation or text by indicating the structure and flow of the discourse. Discourse markers serve various functions, such as introducing information, signaling agreement or disagreement, expressing emphasis, or transitioning between different topics or ideas.

Why are they important?

They are part of your fluency and coherence score. They are the coherence aspect. They make it easy for the listener to follow what you are saying. A range of them is necessary for band scores 6 and above.
